In the beginning, learning to scuba dive was a harrowing experience; hard physical training was in order and it could take months to earn your certification. The equipment, in its embryonic stage, was primitive, safety was negligible and the divers had to be marine mammals in the truest sense just to survive. It was a very macho sport and the early divers were often looked upon as little better than sea going ruffians.
Today's diver is a study in modern technology; the old rubber wetsuits have been replaced with colourful counterparts manufactured from space age materials, fins are engineered for optimum thrust and masks are both comfortable and efficient. The modern diver is equipped with sophisticated instruments. Buoyancy is controlled with the push of a button; push one button and the diver floats high at the surface, push another and they descend. Slight adjustments at different depths allow the diver to maintain neutral buoyancy or complete weightlessness. A pressure gauge monitors air supply much like the fuel gauge in a car and a computer at the divers side keeps track of depth and time considerations
The entry-level certification is known as the openwater scuba certification. This course is comprised of classroom studies, pool sessions and openwater dives. In the classroom the student will learn the physics and physiology pertaining to diving, equipment function, diving techniques and oceanology. In the pool, skills are developed such as mask clearing, buoyancy control, ascents and descents and safety procedures. In the ocean all the skills that are learned in the pool are perfected and the student will be introduced to the undersea environment.
Modern scuba diving has something for everybody no matter where your topside interests may lie. There's fresh and saltwater diving, underwater hunting and collecting, cave and cavern diving, wreck diving and underwater photography. Those that wish can continue their dive education and enter the professional levels of recreational scuba diving by becoming a divemaster or an instructor.
Diving is the perfect getaway to visit exotic locales and it offers the utmost in relaxation. Luxurious resorts revolve around diving activities with diver training and continuous trips to the dive sites. For divers on a budget, beach houses can be shared among friends and there are always deals on last minute hotels. There's a whole new world out there waiting to be discovered, but scuba diving has one very definite drawback; it's addicting.
